The Story of Magic

On Tuesday, November 5th (11.5 – two auspicious numbers for me) my two friends and I were walking our morning walk. About 2 miles in we happened upon a black and white, petite French-looking kitty. We said our hellos and she, hers. Very friendly she was rubbing up against our legs. The three of us women wondered out loud where she belonged, said our goodbyes and bid blessings for safety (she was just off the sidewalk off the road) and continued walking.

Normally we enter the public beach access and walk a long stretch of beach for the duration, however this day the tide was high and raucous so we jumped back on the sidewalk and committed to a paved route this morning.

As we looped back and headed to our starting point we happened upon the black and white kitty again in her same spot, the spot we would have missed a second time had we walked the beach. We asked aloud more questions and dug deeper into her story. I poked around in the bushes and found empty cans of cat food and a cardboard box. She was too friendly to be feral, so we concluded that someone put her outside after having lived with humans for some time. She was being fed but by whom it was unknown to us.

All three of us ran through the gamut of why we each could not bring her home. One friend already has three cats, the other, a cat who doesn’t like other cats. I had no reason to not bring her home other than I wasn’t looking to have another cat and I really didn’t have the time to fool with getting a rescued cat house-ready (shots, fixed, etc.).

So I said that I would go home, get my pet carrier, go to the store to buy some canned cat food and return to the spot to get her. What I would do with her after that point, I wasn’t sure.

So that’s what I did and when I returned…the kitty wasn’t there! I was poking around calling for her, feeling a little sad and a little relieved, when I saw a woman standing facing the bushes around the way. I walked over and asked if she was there for the kitty. Indeed she was! She had the kitty in her animal carrier, lured in with a can of cat food just like I had planned!

She told me that she’s been helping to oversee the feeding of this kitty with the assistance of her neighbors for about two months. She had already arranged for her veterinarian to fix the cat and notch the ear (a sign or code that the animal has been fixed) so that she could re-release the kitty in this spot and not worry about her reproducing. She said that she couldn’t give the kitty a home, as much as she’d like to, because her cat dislikes other cats.

She said one neighbor may be able to give the kitty a home but she wasn’t sure. I said that I may be able to give her a home and the woman lit up with delight! She was so excited that this darling cat might have a home to keep her safe and healthy. I told her that I have one cat and one dog and as long as this kitty acclimates to our home, she is welcome to stay.

So the woman carried forth with her plans to take the kitty to her vet and have her checked out and fixed up. It was determined that the kitty is female and about 6 months old. She tested negative for feline leukemia and was spayed and micro-chipped. She was given her shots, cleaned up and given a dose of flea medication. And the generous, kind woman paid for all the expenses!! This kitty came with her very own fairy godmother!! That’s magic!

So the kitty was taken in Tuesday and my daughter and I picked her up Friday. In between I had a lot of convincing of my husband to do to gain his blessing in bringing the new cat home (let’s just say he got some new bonus magic beads). I succeeded! We named her Magic not only because of her story but also because our other cat is named Houdini.

Magic is getting more comfortable in our home and braver by the hour. She has the guest bathroom to herself at the moment (where all these photos were taken this morning…bed head and all!) and has spent some time in my daughter’s bedroom. She has heard the dog whine at her incessantly through the door and has met Houdini on two occasions. We placed Magic in her carrier with the door closed in the bathroom and brought in Houdini so that they could safely see one another. She hissed and scared Houdini who wanted out of the bathroom ASAP.

So we are adjusting slowly but surely. I feel certain Magic will fully integrate into our family over time. If you have advice or suggestions for making this the easiest transition possible, please let me know in the comments. Houdini is an indoor/outdoor cat and we look forward to Magic being the same.
