My LeafSide Review

I first tried LeafSide meals in May 2018 so at this writing I’m ten months into life with LeafSide fueling me and it seems like a perfect time to give my in-depth LeafSide review.

(All LeafSide links on this page are affiliate links. If you place an order through one of these links, you’ll generate a little bonus for me which helps keep me happily supplied with LeafSide meals. This costs you nothing extra. Thank you!)

My current LeafSide meal pack stash!

I value LeafSide for two main reasons:

1. The shelf-stable (no refrigeration!) meal packs are always in my pantry ready for a quick, filling meal, and,

2. I know each Leafside meal pack will provide for me a greater number of different high-quality ingredients in one meal than I’ll make from scratch. As a vegan whole food nutritionist, I value this immensely!

I would rather be outside exercising than chopping and dicing in the kitchen. (Honestly, I’d rather be at my desk writing this blog post than chopping and dicing!) Every now and then I slow down and get a creative urge to craft something delectable from scratch, but that’s a rare occasion (just ask my family!) so LeafSide meal packs support my active lifestyle without skimping on high quality nutrition.

Looking in the Thai Veggie Noodle Savory Bowl bag

Most days I eat one LeafSide meal pack. Occasionally I’ll eat two. I usually eat LeafSide in the morning for breakfast whether it’s a sweet smoothie, a sweet stir bowl, or, if I want a little morning kick, a savory stir bowl.

Here is the order in which I tend to eat categories of LeafSide meal packs from most to least in the warm and summer months:

1. Sweet smoothies
2. Sweet stir bowls
3. Savory stir bowls
4. Savory soups

Here is the order in which I tend to eat categories of LeafSide meal packs from most to least in the cold and winter months:

1. Sweet stir bowls
2. Savory stir bowls
3. Savory soups
4. Sweet smoothies

The dry Thai Veggie Noodle Savory Bowl in a bowl

For the smoothies I put the meal pack contents in my high-speed blender and add the recommended cups of water. I’ll go walk my dog while the contents hydrate. When I come back to the kitchen, I add some frozen fruit (pineapple, mixed berries, banana) instead of ice cubes and blend. Easy! Delicious! I pour it into a large glass and use a glass straw and feel really Instagramy-good about myself and how my day has begun. I know I don’t have to think about food for another 4-5 hours, at least.

The Thai Veggies Noodle Savory Bowl with water

When I have a sweet stir bowl, I boil water in my kettle, pour the LeafSide meal pack contents into a bowl, pour the recommended amount of hot water over the contents, stir, cover the bowl with a plate and go walk my dog. When I return, the meal is completely hydrated and ready to eat.

If I need a little extra kick to start my day, I’ll choose a savory stir bowl or I might enjoy it later in the day. I’m a wimp when it comes to spice, so I often drizzle cashew cream over my savory stir bowl after I’ve prepared it with hot water just like the sweet stir bowl. Cashew cream is just a cup of pre-soaked cashews, less than one cup of water, a splash of apple cider vinegar (or juice of half a lemon), and a generous pinch of sea salt.

Sometimes the cream is thicker or thinner depending on how much water I use and how long I blend them. It’s important to me to always have pre-soaked frozen cashews on hand so I maintain that supply and I use a high speed blender to blend the cream. I soak several cups of raw, organic cashews overnight in a big covered bowl with distilled water and drain and rinse them in the morning before bagging them and tossing them into the freezer. Having them frozen also makes the cashew cream nice and cold.

Sometimes if I’m not in the mood to make cashew cream, I’ll add some extra quick oats to the meal pack to dilute the spice a little. This is a great trick if you’re really hungry and just want more volume from the sweet or savory stir bowls or soup meal packs.

The Thai Veggie Noodle Bowl hydrating

I love that LeafSide soups are now pre-blended! No more blending and then heating on the stove. Preparation is just like the stir bowls now: add hot water and let hydrate. I’ve been known to add cashew cream and/or quick oats to my soups too! Kudos to LeafSide headquarters for adjusting to consumer feedback. I value how the company is constantly tweaking their products and recipes to make them better than before.

One thing about LeafSide meal packs that astounds me is that there are no recipes that I like better than the others. They are all so tasty and distinct in their own way. There are certainly no LeafSide meal packs that I avoid or skip. Usually I’ll just blindly reach my hand into the pantry and let fate choose the recipe for me.

Here is one complaint that I hear from others who try LeafSide and I can relate. At first, upon initial try, they taste super “healthy.” Do you know that taste? It tastes kind of like the smell of a health food co-op store. When I first tried all the recipes, I felt so good about what I was eating that I accepted “that healthy taste.” And I’m so glad I did.

One characteristic of a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) diet is that there is an adjustment period for everyone’s individual taste buds and gut bacteria to adapt. This is true even if you’re already eating a WFPB diet and level-up to LeafSide. I wasn’t previously eating 20-30 highly recommended whole plant ingredients per meal until I began eating LeafSide. My tongue and belly were like “whoa Nelly!” But after about a week of consistently eating LeafSide, my body adjusted and I started anticipating that healthy characteristic taste of LeafSide which is what the body does when adapting to a new, higher caliber of quality food. Now I crave LeafSide and that signature taste!

I feel like some people give up on LeafSide after one or two meals which is unfortunate. The meal packs are probably more healthful than anything most people are eating on a regular basis. The added fruit sweetens up the smoothies for me and the added cashew cream or quick oats smooths out the spice for me. (Oh, and with the Madras Curry Savory Stir Bowl I sometimes add raisins too because that just seems like such a right fit and they’re a delightful addition!)

If you try LeafSide and don’t fall in love with your first meal, don’t worry! Remember when you ate whole wheat bread for the first time? It’s like that. You eventually reach a point where you can’t remember ever liking white bread.

LeafSide meal packs are nothing like you’ve ever eaten. You have to give your body time to adjust. Customize the meal packs with additional ingredients. It’s okay! But stick with the meal packs. I can nearly guarantee that you’ll start to crave the way they taste and definitely the way they make you feel not only in your body but in your day with all the time you save.

And for the quality and variety of ingredients, I bet you couldn’t make comparable meals from scratch for the same price so you’ll probably feel pretty good in your wallet too for what you’re getting.

I hope this LeafSide review has been helpful to you. Please let me know any questions you might have for me in the comment section below. I’ll tell you everything I can about my life with LeafSide. I recommend the convenient, nutritious, and affordable meal packs whole-heartedly!

This will be my first time ordering so I don’t want to order too much but if I run out before the end of my month can I order more meals before the renewal date? Also how often do they switch up their menu offerings and flavors?

Yes, you can order more meals at any time. New meals come out periodically and you will be notified. I hope you enjoy LeafSide as much as I do!

I am eating Leafside and so glad I found your article. I am coming off a typical unhealthy diet with lots of sweets. I find Leafside to not be very tasty. I can tell that I’m craving sugar. But I’m going to stick with these and hopefully my tastes will change. I am cutting out all sugar so this product will help.

Kudos to you Todd! Yes, your taste buds will change and adapt, for sure. Eventually the LeafSide sweet stir bowls and smoothies will taste sweet to you and your old sugary foods will be too sweet to even eat. Stay strong, tame those gut bacteria and train them to crave wholesome foods. We’ve all been through this transition and I promise you that your taste buds will adapt and your gut bacteria will learn to prefer wholesome foods.

Hi Tricia, I haven’t had a LeafSide meal since last month. I’m due to order! Excited to try the new goji berry and peach stir bowl. Just did a search of my 2020 Food Diary and found that I’ve logged eating LeafSide 76 times so far this year. My consumption will certainly pick up again as the weather cools off. I love the hot sweet stir bowls! It’s still quite warm here in South Carolina in late October as I write. It’s due to start cooling off soon which will bring back my more regular hot sweet stir bowl consumption.

Have you tired the potato leek soup? There was a really mealy texture which I think was the potatoes. I soaked longer than recommended, added more water along the way to make it more palatable but nothing worked. I’m not usually adverse to food textures but this particular one made it inedible for me. I also really liked the sauce in the lentil tomato pasta but the pasta was weird. Any suggestions to make these two more appetizing? Enjoying the apple cinnamon crunch sweet bowl right now and it’s really good! Thanks in advance and take care.

Hi Jamie, I’ve not tried the Potato Leek Soup yet. I primarily eat LeafSide for breakfast so consume the sweet bowls as my favorite choice. Please contact LeafSide directly about your experience. They value consumer feedback to improve the recipes and they want you to be happy with your meals. I too love the Vervana marinara but have been enjoying it on whole wheat pasta lately. I like and value the fact that the lentil pasta is made from lentils for the nutrition, color, and variation, but I prefer the taste of the marinara on whole wheat over lentil. I’ll continue to enjoy the lentil pasta now and then. It might taste better and find greater complement with a vegan Alfredo sauce or other white, creamy sauce of which there are many recipes online made with a cashew base. Best wishes and thanks for reading & writing!

Great review. I have my first box and have not found one I don’t like. I’m not even close to being through all of them. I’ve been trying to go Vegan off and on for several months. My biggest obstacle has been what to eat without being totally bored. These foot the bill. My question is, is there anything wrong with just eating these and not cooking anything else at all?

Carla Golden August 19, 2020 at 11:57 am

I think it’s perfectly fine to predominantly rely on LeafSide meals for your nutrition. You might want to enjoy the occasional fresh fruit or veggie for variety however LeafSide alone will meet your nutritional needs.

I’m thankful for your website with lots of info to start with Leafside meals. Just received my first box and adjusting to eating 1 meal a day. My sweet tooth has me adding stevia to the sweet bowls and smoothies. Maybe I’ll adjust. Since I live alone and can’t store many perishables I’m glad I found leafside. Also due to health issues, I can’t spend much energy on prep. No questions, just want to thank you.

I ordered a box of 12. I tried to bowls and they were inedible. They looked horrible and unappetizing. I barely got a few mouthfuls of each and had to throw them out. I was really looking forward to this but man I would be embarrassed to attach my name and reputation these this awful slop. Also you pay for return shipping and are only credited for unopened meals.

LeafSide meals could be a vast departure for some people. If someone is not used to eating whole plant foods on the regular, LeafSide might be a big leap. I honestly enjoy each LeafSide meal that I consume and look forward to eating them. My taste buds are trained for whole plant foods. Gary, have you been eating a whole plant diet before trying LeafSide?

For what it’s worth, I was a customer before I was an affiliate and I spend more money buying LeafSide than I earn as an affiliate. If you’re interested in buying LeafSide go directly to GoLeafSide.com and bypass my affiliate link. You have that power with or without leaving a snide comment. Maintaining a website with helpful information that is free for you to access costs me money and affiliate links help offset those costs. Seems like a smart business decision.

Hey Carla. I appreciate your review. My question is this: do you ever find you need to soak your meals for longer than the recommended time?

On my day 1 lunch – I had the Broccoli Cashew Alfredo and it was too watery. I think I needed to double the soaking time to 20 mins. The cashew alfredo sauce was chunky, the noodles seemed like they weren’t cooked fully, and the whole thing was soupy. Flavor was kind of blah, but it could’ve been my preparation. I probably would not order this again. Maybe I could soak the noodles separately and blend the sauce after soaking…but that’s alot of extra work.

Day 2 lunch – I had the lentil tomato pasta savory bowl. I think I learned my lesson now, because after the first 10 mins, it was still very watery and not soaked in, so I re-covered it and let it soak for another 10 mins. It came out like a slightly watery chili. Don’t get me wrong, I could still eat it with a fork, but it wasn’t thick, it was thin. I had to drink the last bit by picking up the bowl. As for taste, it was excellent. I would not hesitate to get this one again.

I still have quite a few more to try before I know if I will keep going, but I’d like to know if it is my preparation or the meals that is the issue.

Please let me know if you have any tips or tricks.
Thanks.

Hi Bryan, thanks for checking out LeafSide and for writing. These days I exclusively eat the sweet stir bowls for breakfast so it’s been a long time since I’ve had the savory stir bowls. The temperature of your water might be a factor and/or the soak time. Are you using super hot boiling water? When I soak my sweet stir bowls, I usually go walk my dog while it soaks so I know it soaks for longer than 10 minutes and I use super hot boiling water from my kettle. I know that LeafSide customer service would be more than willing to help you achieve a perfectly prepared dish. I’m sure they’ve figured out all the tricks. Good luck and let me know if I can be any further help.

Do others find they have stomach problems with goleaf? I have just started and I’m having them. Will my gut get used to all the fiber? Also are 1 meal and one smoothie
A day have enough nutrition? I find them very filling and can’t eat or drink all. Thanks for advice

Reply

Carla Golden June 6, 2021 at 12:06 pm

Hi Elberta, if you’re not used to eating a high amount of fiber from whole foods, it might be wise to scale back and then ramp up more slowly. There can be an adjustment period for the body. Just as one can’t go from a sedentary lifestyle to overnight running a marathon, it’s important to start with 1 mile then 5 miles and build slowly to give the body time to adjust. You will get used to the fiber. Because of the high fiber content from the whole plants in the LeafSide meals, it’s common to find them very filling. If you need expert help with digestive issues, I high recommend the book Fiber Fueled by Dr. Will Bulsiewicz. He also has a great website HERE. Good luck & keep going!

Hi Carla!

I have been WFPB for over 30 years and I believe it has saved my life. I a man avid follower of Dr.’s Greger and Klapper and True North and others.
Recently in an effort to drop a few pounds I started focusing on caloric density. It has helped a great deal-kind of like Noom.
I am now getting back to Leafside after a couple of years and want to incorporate a caloric density overlay to everything I eat. So, things like nuts and dates etc. concern me without knowing how much of each ingredient is in each packet. They give a comprehensive nutrition profile but I don’t see refernce to caloric density specifically. Any thoughts? thanx steve

I had the same reaction. Tastes like survival food. Great concept but poor execution. Even with proper prep, the food does not resemble a freshly cooked meal. And before anyone accuses me of needing to adapt to eating whole plant based healthy food, I’ve been eating whole food plant based for over 20 years. I eat steamed kale for breakfast, so I’m pretty hard core.

There are some LeafSide meals that I like better than others. I prefer the sweet stir bowls for breakfast. I think they are delicious!

JPresley September 18, 2021 at 4:04 pm

I haven’t tried the breakfasts yet; I wanted to try the veggie-rich items. Like some of the responders here, I’m not sure I like them or can adapt to them. The sweet potato dal, for example, was flat and granular in my mouth. Salt helped a bit, and little added milk, but if I get too adventuresome in adding too much stuff to these packs, I might just as well make my own from scratch. I have the rest of last night’s (not so creamy) potato soup in the fridge and will experiment with other ingredients again and try to eat it tonight. What I do love about these food packs so far is how good they feel to my belly and gut. And I appreciate the nutrition and the very effort of Dr. Greger and his team to offer (what may turn out to be for me) such a gift. If you don’t like these savory bowls, you might consider adding a bit more flavor through a little salt & pepper; Aleppo pepper; coconut aminos; mango pickle; or hot sauce or walnuts or pecans or pistachios or whatever you like. I may give up on these food packs after all, but I hope I can stick with them. So far, they don’t taste wonderful out of the pack, but they fit right into the How Not to Die approach to life.

Thank you for sharing your LeafSide experience and your enhancement suggestions JPresley.Yes, the exceptional nutrition and preparation convenience can sometimes make up for lack of ultimate flavor. I appreciate your honesty. After trying all the LeafSide meals (except maybe the latest releases) I’ve concluded that the sweet stir bowls are the best fit for me: exceptional nutrition, preparation convenience, and delicious flavor. I look forward to eating them and I add nothing…except some extra oats to the Berry Medley option.
